College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, AWKUM, Celebrated World Rabies Day

 

College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan celebrated World Rabies Day on September 28, 2023. World Rabies Day (WRD), established by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) and recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) every September 28, is a transcendental day to promote the fight against this disease and reinforce awareness about its prevention. In this regard, WRD was observed followed by a walk in AWKUM campus to create awareness about this deadly disease and its control and prevention up to zero percent as the target set by WHO. The walk was led by Prof. Dr. Sher Bahadar Khan,  Principal,  CVS & AH,  AWKUM, and saw active participation from both students and faculty members.  At the conclusion of the walk, Prof. Dr. Sher Bahadar Khan addressed the participants, imparting valuable information about rabies, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership, and promoting awareness on how to protect both human and animal lives from this deadly disease. This event stood as a testament to the commitment of CVS & AH AWKUM towards safeguarding public health and animal welfare.

Department of Environmental Sciences’ Research Students Received “National Climate Action Award”

 

Research Students of the Department of Environmental Sciences (AWKUM), Ms. Farzeen Sajid, Mr. Luqman Hakeem, Mr. Adil Khan received National Climate Action Award for their contributions in promoting environment-friendly biomass briquettes making from agro-wastes in nomadic communities living in Mardan. The idea is the outcomes of the research works carried out under the supervision of Dr. Shams Ali Baig, Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Science, AWKUM.  The research team had conducted a month-long awareness campaign and demonstration sessions during November-December 2022 in the targeted communities with the support of Pakistan Red Cresent Society (PRSC).  

The research team received the National Climate Action Award from UNDP Pakistan and SDGs Academy Islamabad, Pakistan, in the ceremony “National Youth Policy Dialogue on Climate Change” help on September 13, 2023, at Marriot Hotel Islamabad. His Excellency Mr. Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem AlZaabi (Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Pakistan) and Mr. Khalil (Federal Minister for Human Rights and Women Empowerment) and the Chairman of SDGs Academy Pakistan were the guests of honor in the ceremony.

Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan's Department of Psychology Organized a Seminar on "Suicide Prevention: A Mental Health Issue"

In commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Department of Psychology at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan organized a one-day seminar titled "Suicide Prevention: A Mental Health Issue." The event aimed to shed light on the critical issue of suicide prevention and raise awareness of its implications.

Dr. Tahir Farid, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, led the seminar, imparting valuable insights into suicide prevention strategies, risk factors, and its perception within the Islamic context. The seminar provided an in-depth understanding of the importance of mental health and the steps that can be taken to prevent suicide.

Dr. Farid emphasized the need for open discussions and awareness campaigns to combat the growing concerns surrounding mental health and suicide. He stated, "Addressing mental health issues and promoting suicide prevention is a collective responsibility. We must create a supportive environment where individuals can seek help without fear of stigma."

The event concluded on a powerful note with a walk organized under the supervision of Professor Dr. Zahir Shah, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Faculty members, students, and participants carried placards advocating for suicide awareness, displaying messages of hope and encouragement.

Professor Dr. Shah praised the initiative, saying, "It is crucial to tackle the stigma associated with mental health problems. Events like these play a significant role in fostering a community that is supportive, empathetic, and ready to help those in need."

The seminar and awareness walk held by the Department of Psychology at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan showcased a strong commitment to addressing mental health challenges and suicide prevention. By raising awareness and encouraging open conversations, the university is taking proactive steps to make a positive impact on the well-being of its community and beyond.
