No Peace and Sustainable Development without Human Rights and Prevention of Gender -Based Violence in Emergency (GBVIE) in Pakistan

 

On the occasion, Additional Secretary Relief, Rehabilitation and Settlement Khyber Pakhtunkhwa expressed his views that without empirical evidence and statistical data set it is hard to prevent and respond to GBViE, however the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and humanitarian partners through joint efforts contributing greatly to prevent and respond to GBViE. In his speech he appreciated the efforts and technical support of UNFPA, all United Nations Agencies, Gender and Child Cell PDMA, humanitarian partners and academia to achieve Sustainable Development Goals which are committed by the Government of Pakistan. The opening remarks were shared by Director PDMA, and he shared that Gender & Child Cell PDMA KP is the first response authority of the government of KP to respond GBVIE in any disaster and emergency. Dr. Hussain Ali, Assistant Professor of Sociology Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan presented the vulnerability of women and girls during disasters and humanitarian settings. He shared in his presentation that without engaging academia and doing field research we are unable to initiate research-informed policy and programme initiatives. He expressed that the government of Pakistan is already committed to achieve Gender Equality but without prevention and response to GBVIE it is not possible.

In the event an animated video on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in disasters was displayed to the audience and it was followed by a panel discussion. In the panel discussion Ms. Mahjabeen Qazi, the Provincial Coordinator UNFPA, Dr. Nazia Zaman Deputy Director LHW Program KP, Ms. Syeda Nudrat Deputy Secretary Women Empowerment and Mr. Muhammad Sadique Assistant Director M&E PDMA was invited to discuss the response initiatives of government line departments to GBVIE, the UNFPA role as technical expert to enhance the capacity of government and humanitarian partners to prevent and better respond to GBViE.  The panel discussion was hosted by Dr. Hussain Ali from Department of Sociology Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan. In the panel discussion PDMA representatives shared that they have developed a GBVIE Framework to integrate GBV considerations in all line government departments and humanitarian partners prevention and response guidelines and strategies. He stresses that all government and humanitarian partners need to develop guidelines for their departments and organizations to better respond to GBVIE. Representative of the LHW Program expressed her views that the LHW Program covers the whole KP and our LHWs are the first contact point of any GBViE. The representative also highlighted that capacity building of LHWs and LHSs is much needed on GBVIE-related issues to better respond to GBVIE. The representative of Social welfare and Women Empowerment expressed that they are providing shelter and livelihood training to vulnerable women and girls, they are also providing health, legal and psychological counseling support through referral pathways to the survivors. However, she highlighted that on a permanent basis legal advisers, psychologists and frequent visits of gynecologists and other health practitioners is much needed. The UNFPA representative shared her views that UNFPA is a technical advisory agency, and the agency is working with government line departments, academia and humanitarian partners to integrate international GBViE guidelines in the national and regional policies. It was also highlighted that UNFPA is also working with different partners to enhance the capacity of the department’s officials to better plan and respond to GBV, GBVIE, and the sexual and Reproductive Health concerns of women and adolescent girls.

At the end of the event shields were distributed among the panelists and organizers of the event. The event was organized on December 19, 2024 at Monal Peshawar. Secretary Home, officials from government departments, representatives of humanitarian partners, students and faculty department of Sociology from Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar participated in the event. The event was organized by Gender and Child Cell PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the technical and financial support from UNFPA-Pakistan.

1st International Conference titled “Recent Trends in Social Sciences, Cohesion and Familial Life”

 

An International conference titled “Recent Trends in Social Sciences, Cohesion and Familial Life” was held online for three days (January 20-22, 2021) at Main Campus, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM). The conference was jointly organized by the Department of Sociology and International Relations, AWKUM.

In the conference 85 national and international scholars and professionals presented their work. The conference provided a platform to the academicians, scholars, professionals, social scientist, and government representatives to raise scholarly discussion on the key social issues affecting and influencing the recent development in the field of social sciences. The conference also discussed the recent trends in social sciences and its influence on national and foreign policy. The scholars presented various perspectives on the key issues affecting and promoting social cohesion at familial, communal, social, national, and international relationship. The scholars developed theoretical connections between the social cohesion and its influence on familial life, children socialization, structure & agency, and overall social development. The conference presenters shared modern practices which may be used to become more cohesive in the familial and communal life. In the conference keynote speakers talk about the scientific quantitative and qualitative techniques which may be used to study the recent trends in social sciences and its connection with social cohesion and familial life.      

The Patron in Chief of the conference was Prof. Dr. Zahoor Ul Haq the Worthy Vice Chancellor, AWKUM. The Co-patron in Chief was Prof. Dr. Zahid Ali Khan Marwat Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Zahid Hussain Director Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), and Dr. Syed Rashid Ali Associate Professor/Chairperson Department of Sociology, AWKUM.

The Chief Organizer of the Conference was Dr. Ahmad Ali Assistant Professor in Sociology, and Dr. Hussain Ali Lecturer in Sociology was the Conference Secretary. The other organizers of the conference were Dr. Abdul Shakoor Chairperson, Dr. Sajjad Ali Khan Assistant Professor, Mr. Jawaad Ullah Lecturer Department of International Relations, and Mr. Muhammad Zakria Research Assistant in Sociology was the conference coordinator.

Two Days Workshop on “Analysis For Academic Research”


The Department of Sociology organized a two days workshop on “Analysis for Academic Research” in collaboration with Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORICs) Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) at Main Campus. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Ahmad Ali (Assistant Professor) and Dr. Hussain Ali (Lecturer) Department of Sociology, AWKUM. The workshop was delivered by Dr. Qaiser Khalid Mahmood (Resource Person)/Assistant Professor Department of Sociology, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI). In the workshop PHD, MPHIL, BS 7th and MA 3rd students participated. Dr. Syed Rashid Ali Chairperson Department of Sociology welcomed the resource person, Director ORIC and all the student participants. In workshop the facilitators conducted a pre-test about the basic content of the workshop to test the conceptual understanding of the participants. The workshop mainly covered the SPSS installation, Data coding, Data re-coding, data cleaning, data transformation, inferential analysis (parametric), inferential analysis (non-parametric), regression and factor analysis. At the end post-test was conducted.
In his closing remarks Dr. Syed Rashid Ali Chairperson of this department shared that the workshop was very informative and useful for the students and even for faculty participated in the event. He stated that a series of training will be planned on subject theme to become more specialized in academic research data analysis.  At the end certificate distribution ceremony was held and certificates were distributed among the participants, organizers and a shield was presented to resource person.

Dr. Hussain Ali Lecturer of Sociology, AWKUM Presentation in International Conference



Dr. Hussain Ali Lecturer Department of Sociology Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan presented a research paper in International Conference on Gender Studies “Gender Misrepresentations” in Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge United Kingdom (1-2, December 2018).
The research paper Men’s Decision Making: The Determinant of Home Delivery among Women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan” mainly focused to study the men’s decision making and its influence on choice of delivery place among Pakhtun Women in the study area (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa).
The researcher presented the poor maternal health condition in Pakistan and particularly in the study area. The presentation covered the Three Delay (3D) model and conceptual framework to state the various men’s dominant factors and their significant association with poor maternal health.
The major findings show the highly significant correlation between men’s decision making and women’s restriction from accessibility and utilization of maternal health care in the study area. Similarly due to women subordinate position they are confined to domestic sphere for antenatal care and child delivery. Dr. Olena Lytovka & Anastasya Manuilova, London Center for Interdisciplinary Research, United Kingdom chair the session. The chair appreciated the work focused on one of the important gender issue and shared in their views that women in Pakistan especially in the study area in the worse health condition which need to addressed by the involvement of government functionaries and civil society organizations. At the end of conference certificate was presented to researcher by the chair.

The students of Science and Arts participated in the seminar and they presented different models in the supervision of Principal/Dy. Provost (Female) Mrs. Naseem Rafiq and Ms. Robina Zakir, Lecturer in Home Economics made from waste materials.
