The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
UK and RSC Pakistan organized the 1st International Conference on
Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Discovery. The conference is being held at
COMSTECH secretariat, Islamabad, Pakistan. The federal minister for Science
Technology Mr. Azam Swati attended the inaugural session today at COMSTECH
secretariat. The Vice Chancellor Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan Professor
Dr. Khursheed Ahmad Khan, Vice Chancellor Women University, Swabi Professor Dr.
Fatima Khanzadi Khattak, Coordinator COMSTECH, Khursheed Hasnain, Chairman
Department of Pharmacy Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad Dr. Gul Majeed, Dr. Ayaz
conference coordinator, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan and Dr. Asad Ali,
Director ORIC, AWKUM were present on the occasion along with researchers,
scientists, students and academicians from other institutions of the country.
Several eminent scientists of the RSC from UK, Lebanon, Egypt, Indonesia,
Germany, Algeria, Malaysia, Turkey, Palestine, Oman and other countries are
attending the conference. The conference is organized by Abdul Wali Khan
University Mardan, Women University Swabi, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad
and the University of Punjab Lahore in collaboration with the RSC, UK and the
Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Chos Bountra from Oxford
University UK, Prof. Dr. Zaheer-Ul-Haq University of Karachi, Dr. Ghasan
Albarghoti Birzeit University Palestine and Dr. Michael Mcdonogh from Oxford
University, UK presented their papers in the 1st session of the conference
which was chaired by Dr. Gul Majeed from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.
The speakers talked about their research on cancer and informed the audience
about the hazards and potential threats from different types of cancer as this
disease claims 1 human life every 19 seconds throughout the world. The speakers
insisted on the need of collaborative research work by researchers from around
the world and that close liaison and linkage of industry and academia is
important for quick and efficient control of this lethal disease. Members of
the conference said that this international conference will be an important
step towards finding solutions for cancer and other such diseases.
